Public health nurses continue protests in Sam Sharpe Square following physical assault of one of their colleagues

Several public health nurses are continuing their protest over the physical assault of one of their colleagues in an alleged road rage incident in St. Andrew earlier this month.

The placard-bearing healthcare workers took to Sam Sharpe Square in St. James this morning to further register their anger over the matter.

This morning’s demonstration follows similar action in several parishes, including Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Ann and St. Elizabeth last week.

Parish Manager for the St. James Health Services, Lennox Wallace, said he believes the attack is a stark reminder that some households are permeated with violence, which can eventually spill over into society.

He is calling for change and for persons who know of abusers to expose them.

Meanwhile, Mr. Wallace said he has faith in the nation’s justice system to deal properly with persons who commit acts of violence against women and girls.

The healthcare workers are calling for justice.

A video of the incident shows the nurse being beaten, wrestled to the ground and stomped on by a man armed with what appeared to be a gun.

65-year-old businessman Robert Bell of St. Andrew is facing five charges in relation to the incident.

Bell, who made his first appearance in the gun court last Wednesday, was denied bail.

Following national outcry over the assault, the judge reportedly thought it was safer for Bell not to be released at this time.
