Rights groups call for apology from West Portland MP following comments at political meeting

By Markelia Rumble

Rights group Equality for All Foundation (formerly J-FLAG) is calling on the Office of the Political Ombudsman to establish clear and strong guidelines for conduct at political rallies and on the campaign trail.

The call follows comments made by West Portland Member of Parliament Daryl Vaz, who encouraged the playing of a song widely known to promote violence against LGBTQ+ persons in Jamaica.

Expressing deep disappointment in the use of homophobic slurs at political events, Executive Director Glenroy Murray says Mr. Vaz should issue a public apology.

Meantime, advocacy group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is also supporting the call.

Executive Director Mickel Jackson described the incident as regressive and a backward display by those entrusted to lead.
