Cavalier celebrates historic back-to-back Jamaica Premier League Titles
Cavalier Football Club is still basking in the glow of victory this morning after clinching their second consecutive Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League title. The club secured their third championship in the last four years—and fourth overall—following a nerve-wracking 6-5 win on sudden death penalties over Mount Pleasant Academy in Friday’s Super Final at the National Stadium.
After a tense 90 minutes plus extra time that saw both teams locked in a goalless stalemate, it was Cavalier’s resilience and composure that ultimately tipped the scales in their favor.
Goalkeeper Vino Barclett, who was later named Man of the Match, delivered a series of stunning saves throughout the game, keeping the scoreboard untouched and forcing the contest into a penalty shootout. The first five spot-kicks for both sides were fiercely contested, with the score tied at 4-all after misses from Cavalier’s Christopher Ainsworth and Mount Pleasant’s captain Sue-Lae McCalla, both blasting their attempts over the crossbar.
The drama peaked when Barclett saved a crucial penalty from Mount Pleasant’s Clifford Thomas, sealing a remarkable victory for Cavalier and making them the first team since Portmore United in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons to retain the Premier League crown.
With this triumph, both Cavalier and Mount Pleasant Academy have earned the honor of representing Jamaica at the upcoming Concacaf Caribbean Cup, set to kick off in August. The draw for the 2025 tournament will be held on June 3.
Meanwhile, in the battle for third place, Arnett Gardens edged out Mobay United with a 4-2 victory, securing their spot on the podium for the second consecutive year. This win also qualifies Arnett Gardens for the 2025 CFU Club Shield, where they will defend their title as reigning champions.
