Managing Director of Medical Technologies Limited Athol Hamilton has rejected as simply untrue, allegations and suggestions by the opposition that the company has been involved in massive overpricing in the acquisition of the Medtronic neurosurgical drill for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Mr. Hamilton has described as disturbing the claims by spokesman on health Dr. Alfred Dawes about the drill purchased by the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) .

He said the claims are false.

The Peoples National Party (PNP) has been questioning the expenditure of just over $31 m on a single neurosurgical drill.

Yesterday, it called for a probe into the expenditure.

In a statement today, Medical Technologies outlined that the drill referenced  by Dr. Dawes and the documents he showed represented the motor component of a drill owned by the company which was purchased some  years ago.

According to the statement, the motor component was sent to the United States of America (USA) on September 26, 2024, for repairs. 

It says the commercial invoice for the repair supports these facts.

The company stated that the drill repair has nothing to do with the new drill of a different model sold to SERHA.

It added that the neurosurgical drill sold to SERHA is a new EM800 series drill and not the EM200 model, as stated by Dr. Dawes.

Medical Technologies Limited stated that it participated in a transparent tender process for the procurement of the neurosurgical drill and was successful.

The company further explained that no advance payment was made by SERHA and, to date, Medical Technologies Limited has not been paid for the equipment, despite it being delivered almost seven months ago and being used by surgeons at Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Medical Technologies Limited said it has instructed its attorneys to review carefully the information, allegations and suggestions made by Dr. Dawes at the press conference.

It added that it   will take all necessary legal steps to protect its good name and reputation, considering its role as an important stakeholder in the healthcare sector across the Caribbean.
