The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has called for a fulsome investigation into the purchase of neurosurgical drills by the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).

Spokesman on Health Dr. Alfred Dawes says two files on the party’s probe into the matter will be submitted to the Auditor General and the Integrity Commission for a full investigation.

For months now, the PNP has been questioning the expenditure of just over $31 million on a single neurosurgical drill for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

SERHA has rejected assertions that there was any improper process in the acquisition of the equipment, stating that it was transparent and ensured value for money.

However, the spokesman insists that research suggests  the drill could have been procured at a much lower price.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Dr. Dawes claimed that last November two drills similar to the one in question were brought in by the company that supplied the 31 million dollar drill.

He said the cost for those refurbished drills  including purchase price, and customs fees totaled J$250,000.

Dr. Dawes said he has more questions.

Meantime, he said he files from the PNP will be submitted to  the authorities for a probe.
