JCF notes troubling trend of motor vehicle thieves becoming more tech-savvy
The Jamaica Constabulary Force has noted a troubling trend of motor vehicle thieves becoming more tech-savvy and being able to bypass security systems.
According to head of the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch, (CTOC)’s Stolen Motor Vehicle Unit, Marcel Bedward, technology now makes it easier for vehicles to be stolen.
He said gone are the days of smashing a glass window or windscreen to access a vehicle; as criminals now have certain high-tech tools which enable them to gain entry seamlessly.
As part of efforts to combat vehicle theft, the police use smart check devices that provide information in real-time about a stolen vehicle.
The Jamaica Eye System is also used.
