Alexis Ohanian makes major move in women’s football with stake in Chelsea
Alexis Ohanian, the tech entrepreneur and founder of Reddit, has made a significant investment in women’s football, purchasing an 8-10% stake in Chelsea Women’s Football Club, the reigning English Women’s Super League (WSL) champions. The stake, valued at approximately £20 million, comes as Ohanian continues his commitment to the growth of women’s sports.
As part of the deal, Ohanian will also gain a seat on the Chelsea board, marking a new chapter in his growing involvement in sports investment.
The 42-year-old is no stranger to sports investments. He was previously the largest shareholder in American club Angel City FC, a role he held until 2024 when the club was sold for an eye-watering £192.3 million—the highest price ever paid for a women’s sports team at the time.
With an estimated net worth of $150 million, Ohanian’s new investment places the value of Chelsea Women’s Football Club at a staggering £200 million.
Earlier this month, the Chelsea team, which include Reggae Girlz goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, secured their sixth consecutive WSL title, completing a historic 22-game unbeaten run and setting a new league record with 60 points. In addition, Chelsea claimed the Women’s League Cup in March, with an opportunity to complete a domestic treble when they face Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley this Sunday—an event that Ohanian and his wife, tennis superstar Serena Williams, are expected to attend.
