JTA warns actions if concerns about teaching council bill are not addressed

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) said it can take several actions if concerns about the Teaching Council (JTC) Bill are not addressed, but stopped short of detailing those possible measures.
The JTA has stressed that it supports the establishment of the JTC Bill to regulate the profession.
It noted however, that it does not accept the current Bill which was approved by the Senate on April 25, with 38 amendments.
Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon said once enacted, the legislation will give unregistered teachers two years to register with the JTC.
The JTA has taken issue with this requirement, noting that it will pose a challenge to educators.
It’s therefore calling for the Bill to be fixed.
Yesterday, the Association called a meeting with its Action Committee to determine the way forward.
In his remarks at a press briefing following the meeting, President Dr. Mark Smith reiterated that if lawmakers move forward with the Bill in its current state, the Association will be forced to take further actions.
He also made a special plea to former Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness.
Dr. Smith said while there are several actions which can be taken, it is too early to disclose the Association’s next move.
