44 murders in April, the lowest number of murders in a single month in 25 years

April 2025 recorded the lowest number of murders in a single month in 25 years, with 44 killings.

This follows February’s record-setting low of 48 homicides.

The first quarter of 2025 saw a 35 point 9 percent drop in murders compared to the same period in 2024.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake has indicated that this marks the sixth consecutive quarter of decline, with the first quarter showing the sharpest drop in major crimes since 2001.

In a statement, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness credited this record to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and investments in national security, especially through unprecedented levels of funding to the force.

Dr. Holness reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained law enforcement investment, legislative reform, and community engagement, with public safety remaining the top priority.

Meanwhile, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang commended the police and sought to assure that the resources required to tackle crime will be provided.

He reiterated that if current trends hold, Jamaica could finish 2025 with fewer than 8 hundred murders, a milestone not seen in decades.
