PNP supports St. James candidates who filed claim in court over removal of campaign posters.

The People’s National Party (PNP) has indicated that it fully supports and stands firmly behind three of its St. James candidates, who have filed a claim in court regarding the removal of campaign posters.

Dr. Andre Haughton, Senator Janice Allen, and Allan Bernard filed the claim against the St James Municipal Corporation in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

This follows reports that the Corporation removed their posters.

The candidates are seeking six orders from the court to include leave to apply for judicial review in the Supreme Court against decisions of the Corporation to remove lawful political advertising in the parish.

They are also seeking a reversal of the Corporation’s decision, a writ preventing further interference, reinstatement of the posters and damages for abuse of authority.

In a statement, the PNP called on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica and other oversight bodies to take immediate note of these troubling developments.

It said political competition must be free, fair, and untainted by partisan interference from public institutions.

The PNP said it remains unwavering in its defence of its candidates and its commitment to a fair and democratic electoral process.

Meanwhile, Dr. Haughton described the situation as political harassment.

Senator Janice Allen said the Corporation’s actions are a dangerous overreach.

Allan Bernard said the issue is one of principle and fairness.
