“No entity found in breach of the nation’s environmental laws is above prosecution” -Samuda

“No entity found in breach of the nation’s environmental laws is above prosecution.”

That comment from Environment Minister, Matthew Samuda, as he tackled recent pronouncements about the Government’s enforcement of environmental regulations.

Last week, civil society groups, including the Jamaica Environment Trust, argued that the Government’s environmental monitoring is weak.

They added that enforcement of environmental laws is inconsistent, especially when violations are committed by powerful entities.

However, Minister Samuda said the Government will not stand in the way of the enforcement of the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) and Wildlife Protection Acts.

Samuda was speaking during a tour of the Greater Portmore sewage ponds in St. Catherine at the weekend.

The ponds were thrown in the spotlight last week, following the discovery of 10 dead crocodiles.
