Pope Francis has died; Prime Minister Andrew Holness among several world leaders paying tribute

Mourners have gathered in St. Peter’s Square directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, in Rome, Italy as news emerged of Pope Francis’ death.

The Pope, who was the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, died on Easter Monday.

He was 88 years old.

The Pope’s death was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican Camerlengo, who said Francis died at 7:35 AM (12: 35 AM Jamaica time).

Until a new Pope is chosen, Farrell acts as the head of the Vatican.

A BBC reporter interpreted Farrell’s announcement of Pope Francis’ passing.

The Vatican’s announcement comes a day after Pope Francis appeared in St. Peter’s Square to wish “happy Easter” to thousands of worshippers.

He was recently discharged from hospital after five weeks of treatment for a respiratory infection.

Pope Francis’ death prompts a period of mourning after which all Cardinals under the age of 80 will convene to pick the next leader of the Catholic Church. It typically takes between two and three weeks for a new Pope to be chosen.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is among several world leaders paying tribute to the late Pope.

In a social media post this morning, Prime Minister Holness said he was truly saddened by the news of Pope Francis’ death.

He described him as a champion and advocate for change, and one who used his papacy to highlight issues of fairness, equity, climate change and more.

The Prime Minister said the late Pope’s quiet humility endeared millions to his style and a deeper belief in God.

He expressed condolences to the Catholic community, Christians, and all who mourn the death of Pope Francis.

Other world leaders, including those who previously clashed with Pope Francis over political issues, such as immigration and the economy, have also expressed their condolences following the pontiff’s death.

Francis’ papacy was defined by his support for refugees and migrants.

He called for solidarity with those fleeing war and prosecution, urged the world to recognize their suffering, and insisted they should be welcomed into societies.
