Opposition calls for update on the long-awaited Draft Social Enterprise Legal Status Act
The Opposition is calling on the government to provide an update on the long-awaited Draft Social Enterprise Legal Status Act.
The legislation seeks to give legal recognition to social enterprises – entities that operate commercially while pursuing measurable social or environmental goals.
Deputy Spokesperson on Trade and Investment, Omar Newell said in July 2021, it was announced that the draft was ready for submission to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel.
He said no public update has been given since.
Mr. Newell noted that without legal status, Jamaican social enterprises face several challenges including: limited access to investment, and public contracts.
Mr. Newell is urging the government to table the legislation and ensure broad stakeholder consultation.
