St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation urged to assess challenges faced during last year’s hurricane period and implement safety measures

The St. Elizabeth Municipal Corporation is being urged to assess the challenges faced during last year’s hurricane period and to implement corrective measures to ensure safety during the new season, which starts in June.

Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie made the appeal during the Corporation’s monthly meeting yesterday.

He also highlighted that the island is expected to experience increased rainfall starting today.

The met service said this is due to a trough that is expected to enter the western Caribbean and is projected to linger across the region into next week.

The forecast therefore is for periods of showers and thunderstorms, which could be heavy at times to affect Jamaica and especially eastern and central parishes.

The unstable conditions will persist until Sunday.

Noting that St. Elizabeth took a battering from Hurricane Beryl last July, Mr. McKenzie said the Corporation must take the necessary precautionary measures for adverse weather events.

Mr. McKenzie also reminded that hurricanes are not the only disasters to prepare for.

He pointed to earthquakes and motor vehicle crashes as disasters to consider.
