Heated exchanges marred KSAMC meeting, following resolution moved by councillor about water quality issues

Heated exchanges and a walk out by an upset councillor, marred today’s meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, KSAMC, following a resolution moved by councillor Jesse James Clarke about water quality issues.

Mr. Clarke, who represents the Trafalgar division, and is also the opposition Peoples National Party Junior Spokesman on Health, had raised concern about alleged contaminated water being supplied by the National Water Commission, NWC to customers, especially those in rural St. Andrew.

The governing Jamaica Labour Party, JLP and the NWC had dismissed those claims, but Clarke, who chairs the KSAMC’s public health committee, held his ground, and presented data to support his claims.

At today’s council meeting, Clarke moved a resolution, in which he called for an end to the distribution of water that does not meet health standards, citing risks to people.

But, JLP councillor, John Myers, who represents the Lawrence Tavern division, objected to the resolution, and stood on a point of order.

Myers chastised Clarke for allegedly politicising the issue, then walked out of the council meeting.

He criticized the former PNP administration for not fixing water issues for over 20 years.
