Gov’t to roll out dedicated rural school bus system in September
The government will be rolling out a dedicated school bus system for rural Jamaica in September.
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the system is being implemented in phases and is aimed at ensuring equitable access, improved student attendance, and enhanced safety, while easing financial burdens on families.
He explains that under phase one which is in progress, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC expanded services in Clarendon, Morant Bay, and Linstead, providing affordable transport for students.
Twelve 45-seater buses will be added to the fleet of 10 buses, giving the Montego Bay area a total of 22 buses.
The Prime Minister says phase two will see 100 fully refurbished buses deployed across parishes.
60 buses will be put in the system in September, for the start of the new school year and another 40 by January next year.
