Social Security Ministry sounds alarm over the growing financial vulnerability of the elderly
The Ministry of Social Security is sounding the alarm over the growing financial vulnerability of the elderly, highlighting it as one of the most pressing challenges in elderly care.
According to Acting Permanent Secretary, Dione Jennings, the low participation rate in the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), is a major factor behind the problem.
Speaking at a meeting of the Senate Committee on the Care of the Elderly yesterday, Ms. Jennings said to address this issue, the ministry is undertaking a campaign to encourage individuals to start contributing to the NIS at a younger age.
She added that the ministry is working with stakeholders in the Agriculture and Fisheries sectors to increase their involvement in the NIS.
