A senior member of the Jamaica Labour Party has declared that opposition leader Mark Golding should show proof that he has renounced his British citizenship.

The issue of Mr Golding’s citizenship status was raised by Transport Minister and Member of Parliament for West Portland Daryl Vaz at an Area Council 2 leadership meeting in Portland yesterday.

After mounting pressure last year, Mr. Golding indicated he would renounce his British citizenship and in September, it was reported that he had completed the process.

Mr. Vaz pointed out that when he renounced his US citizenship years ago, he showed his renunciation certificate , noting that Mr Golding has yet to prove he has done so.

According to Mr. Vaz, it is fundamentally wrong for anyone seeking the highest office in the country to have allegiance to anywhere other than Jamaica.

Mr Vaz said, Mr Golding should show proof of his citizenship status by the time the election is called.
