CARICOM foreign ministers to meet on U.S. restrictions impacting Cuban medical missions

CARICOM foreign ministers are set to meet again to discuss the next steps for member states regarding the potential adverse impacts of U.S. restrictions on Cuban medical missions.

Last week, the U.S. announced a visa restriction policy related to forced labor linked to Cuba’s labor export program.

These restrictions affect not only Cubans but also foreign government officials and their families.

Concerns have since been raised about the impact on Jamaica and other Caribbean countries that rely on Cuban medical teams, with calls for a unified regional response.

At today’s post-cabinet press briefing, Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith reiterated comments made last week by Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, emphasizing the need for further assessments on the issue.

She, like Dr. Tufton, highlighted that over 400 Cubans are currently in Jamaica as part of the medical mission.

Minister Johnson Smith added that regional foreign ministers are awaiting further clarification from the U.S. on the matter.

She reiterated that the healthcare system is being thoroughly examined to identify solutions if necessary.
