Jamaica begin title defense with victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Regional Women’s Super 50

The defending champions, Jamaica, got off to a winning start in the Regional Women’s Super 50 Cricket Tournament with a solid 51-run victory over Trinidad and Tobago at Warner Park in St. Kitts on Monday.

Electing to bat first, Jamaica posted a competitive total of 223 all out from 49.5 overs. Led by captain Rashida Williams, who top-scored with 51 off 85 balls, and a vital 49-run cameo from former West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor, Jamaica’s innings was built around steady contributions. Chedean Nation also chipped in with 37 runs, further solidifying the team’s position.

Trinidad and Tobago’s best bowling performance came from Anisa Mohammed, who took 3 wickets for 40 runs. She was supported by Karishma Ramharack and Amrita Ramthahal with 2 wickets each.

In response, Trinidad and Tobago’s chase faltered as they were bowled out for 172 in 46.4 overs. Steffie Soogrim top-scored for T&T with 34 runs, while openers Denaja Joseph and Karishma Ramharack contributed 32 runs each.

Vanessa Watts was the standout bowler for Jamaica, claiming 3 wickets for 34 runs. There were also wickets for Celina Whyte, Chedean Nation, Jodina Morgan, Neisha-Ann Waisome, and Kade Wilmot, who all played key roles in restricting Trinidad and Tobago’s progress.

Meanwhile, at the St. Paul’s Sports Complex, West Indies representative Afy Fletcher delivered a stunning performance with the ball, taking 5 wickets for just 15 runs. The Leeward Islands, batting first, were bowled out for just 93 runs. The Windward Islands then cruised to 94 for 2 in reply, clinching an 8-wicket victory.

In the other match of the day at Conaree, Barbados Women defeated Guyana Women by 11 runs. Barbados posted a total of 183 for 5, with Kyshona Knight scoring 52 and captain Aaliyah Alleyne finishing unbeaten on 57. Erin Deane and Keila Elliott were the standout bowlers for Barbados, each taking 3 wickets.

The competition continues on Wednesday with three more exciting matches. Jamaica will face Guyana at St. Paul’s, Trinidad and Tobago will go head-to-head with the Leewards at Conaree, and the Windwards will square off against Barbados at Warner Park.
