Chuck seeking to expand expungement programme
Justice Minister Delroy Chuck is seeking to expand the expungement programme to give more persons with criminal records a second chance.
Mr Chuck says he intends to take the issue to cabinet soon, as part of the efforts to have convictions removed from persons’ record.
Expungement is having a conviction removed from one’s criminal/police record after a specific period of time has elapsed and after certain requirements have been met.
Mr. Chuck notes the challenges faced as the law restricts the number of persons who can have their criminal records expunged.
The justice minister says thousands are applying for expungement and pastors have appealed to him in relation to this matter.
He highlights that many persons have turned their lives around and deserve a second chance.
