Rain-Interrupted opening day sees mixed fortunes across the Regional Four-Day Championship
It was a day of ups and downs in the third round of the Regional Four-Day Cricket Championship, as rain disruptions affected play in several matches, but not before a few players had already made their mark.
At Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, the Jamaica Scorpions, losing the toss and being sent in to bat by home team Barbados Pride, faced early challenges. At 166 for 7, their innings looked in danger of collapsing, but a swashbuckling half-century from Odean Smith helped steady the ship. Smith’s 50 off just 42 balls, which included four sixes and two fours, lifted the Scorpions to 231 all out.
Smith was well-supported by Jeavor Royal (43) and Jermaine Blackwood (30), while opener Carlos Brown (29) and Javelle Glenn (27) also contributed to the total. The rain interruptions disrupted the Scorpions’ momentum, with play being halted twice, first after 38.4 overs when the score was 125 for 4, and again after 39.4 overs at 127 for 5.
Back in the pavilion, Jamaica’s top order struggled to get going. Captain John Campbell made only 16, while Kirk McKenzie could only manage 19. Brad Barnes made just 2 before getting dismissed.
For the Barbados Pride, Chaim Holder was the standout bowler, claiming 3 for 66. West Indies pacer Kemar Roach chipped in with 2 for 45, while the experienced duo of Kraigg Brathwaite and Jomel Warrican each took a wicket.
In reply, Barbados reached 9 without loss by the close of play, leaving the Scorpions with work to do to gain an advantage.
Meanwhile, over at Warner Park in St. Kitts, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force had a day to remember. Batting first against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, they built an imposing total of 326 for 3 by stumps. Joshua Da Silva and Jason Mohammed led the charge with unbeaten centuries. Da Silva finished on 120*, while Mohammed was equally impressive on 104*.
Amir Jangoo also made a valuable contribution, scoring 60 runs to support the top order before he was removed by spinner Rahkeem Cornwall was the most successful bowler for the Hurricanes with 2 for 75.
In Dominica, the weather played its part again as the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) faced the Windward Islands Volcanoes at Windsor Park. CCC, batting first, found themselves at 137 for 5, with Damel Evelyn anchoring the innings on 53*, supported by Johann Jeremiah with 40.
The Volcanoes’ bowlers, led by Kenneth Dember and Darel Cyrus, took two wickets each, keeping the CCC batsmen on their toes. The rain interruptions left the match in a disrupted state, and both teams will hope for improved weather as the contest continues.
