A mother and her son, who were charged following the theft of over $13 million from two Automated Teller Machines in 2020, were freed in the St. Ann court, on Tuesday.

Twenty-four year-old Aamir Beckles, and his mother, 43-year-old Annadean Silvera were released after defense lawyers argued that the confession made by Beckles was coerced.

It’s reported that in January 2020, Beckles who worked as a driver and junior treasury officer for Guardsman Security was apprehended and questioned about the ATM robbery.

He reportedly confessed to being involved in the crime.

In court, Beckles’ attorneys argued that the confession was obtained under duress, after an extensive three-hour interview, in which Beckles was without legal representation and was never advised of his rights.

They contended that the confession was not voluntary, as the interviewer had promised Beckles certain benefits in exchange for his confession.

The attorneys further emphasized that for the majority of the interview Beckles maintained his innocence and only confessed after being promised the benefits.

As such, they argued the confession should be inadmissible.

Meantime, Beckles’ mother had been charged because during the confession Beckles said that he had given her the stolen money to keep safe.

The lawyers argued that there is no evidence to suggest that Silvera was aware of any criminal activity.

After reviewing the video-recorded confession, the prosecution conceded and offered no evidence against either Beckles or Silvera.
