Mount Pleasant’s historic win streak ends with shocking defeat to Harbour View
Mount Pleasant’s remarkable 12-match winning streak in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) came to an unexpected halt on Match Day 22, as they were defeated 2-1 on the road by Harbour View. The loss, which ended their 14-match unbeaten run, marks the first time since October 30 that the St. Ann-based team has tasted defeat.
Heading into the match, Mount Pleasant had been in unstoppable form, scoring 54 goals and conceding just 12 during their incredible streak. However, at the Harbour View Mini Stadium, their momentum was disrupted by two first-half goals. Rohan Brown put the hosts ahead in the 7th minute, while former Mount Pleasant striker Oquassa Chong doubled the lead just before halftime with a 43rd-minute strike.
Despite a late push from Mount Pleasant, capped by a dramatic goal from Daniel Green in the 90th+9’ minute, the deficit proved too much to overcome, leaving them empty-handed. The loss is a blemish to their otherwise dominant campaign, but they still sit atop the standings with 52 points, maintaining an 8-point lead over second-place Montego Bay United.
For Harbour View, the victory was a much-needed boost. Having only won once in their last 13 matches, the Stars of the East moved out of the relegation zone, climbing to 12th place with 19 points.
Meanwhile, in other action, Montego Bay United failed to capitalize on Mount Pleasant’s slip-up, as they were shocked 2-0 by Dunbeholden. Dean Andre Thomas (80’) and Dwight Merrick (85’) were the heroes for Dunbeholden, earning the home side all three points in a critical victory that kept them in the fight for mid-table safety.
Elsewhere, Portmore United continued their push for a top-four finish with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Humble Lion. After going down to Cleo Clarke’s (35’) opener for Humble Lion, Portmore rallied with goals from Shacquwell Henry (76’) and Orlando Russell (88’) to claim all three points and move up to 38 points, holding fourth place.
Waterhouse, still in sixth position with 34 points, were held to a 1-1 draw by Molynes United. Jason Wright gave Molynes the lead in the 80th minute, but Waterhouse responded late through Atapharoy Bygrave (89’) to earn a share of the spoils.
In other matches, Racing United picked up an important 2-1 win against Chapelton Maroons. After going behind to Roshane Myrie’s (56’) goal, Racing United fought back, with Daniel Watson (58’) equalizing before Nickyle Ellis (80’) sealed the victory for the home side who climbed to seventh on 28 points.
As Match Day 22 comes to a close, the defending champions, Cavalier, will face Vere United at 5:00 PM, while Tivoli Gardens will take on third-place Arnett Gardens at 7:45 PM. Both games are set to be played at the Stadium East Complex on Monday.
