Opposition says it will challenge government in court if act to make Portmore a parish is passed without its support

With Parliament set to table the Act that would make Portmore a parish today, the Opposition has again raised concerns regarding the government’s intent behind wanting to create a 15th parish.

In particular, Opposition Spokesman with Special Responsibilities for matters relating to Portmore and Member of Parliament for St. Catherine Southern, Fitz Jackson is accusing the government of seeking to gerrymander political boundaries in St. Catherine and Portmore.

He notes that listed on the Order Paper of Parliament to be tabled today is the Counties and Parishes (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Mr. Jackson observes that the bill is likely to be passed by Parliament given the Jamaica Labour Party’s majority despite the Opposition’s lack of support.

Mr. Jackson says the move will be resisted, even if the Opposition has to challenge it in court.
