Police Commissioner points to 18% reduction in murders as among major achievements for this year
Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake said one of the constabulary’s most significant achievements for 2024 is the 18% reduction in murders.
He made the statement while giving his end of year review.
Dr. Blake said 2024 can be described as a year of promises kept by the Jamaica Constabulary Force but noted that there is more to be done.
He said the deliberate strategic planning and execution by police officers contributed to the reduction in murders.
He also noted a decline in other major crimes, including rapes and robberies.
Meantime, the Police Commissioner said despite a reduction in road crashes, the police remain intolerant to the high number of road deaths.
362 people have been killed in crashes on the nation’s roads since the start of the year.
This is 58 fewer than the 420 fatalities recorded in the corresponding period, last year.
While acknowledging the decline, Dr. Blake says the police will continue to work to reduce road crashes.
