Manchester Municipal Corporation workers walk off the job in protest of outstanding wages
Scores of Manchester Municipal Corporation workers including sweepers, janitors, parking collectors, and market staff walked off the job, on Friday morning.
Some of the placard-bearing workers stood at the entrance to the Mandeville market voicing their complaints regarding not being paid a wage increase and retroactive sums reportedly owed to them.
One of the workers said he and other employees have been waiting for over two years for the promised funds.
He said the workers were told they would be paid in September.
Another employee lamented that it is unfair that workers are yet to receive what is theirs.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer Andrew Harrison says he is awaiting a response from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government regarding requests made to the Ministry of Finance, for the funds to be dispersed.
Mr. Harrison acknowledged the workers’ frustration but said he was unable to provide a timeline for the payment of the sums owed.
