Health Minister says more needs to be done to reduce maternal mortality

Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has acknowledged that while some progress has been made to reduce maternal mortality, more needs to be done.

He made the comment in the wake of reports that a teenage mother died in childbirth at the Spanish Town hospital last week.

It’s reported that the teen mother had a complicated delivery.

Speaking to reporters on a visit to the Spanish Town Hospital on Wednesday Dr Tufton noted that non-communicable diseases, NCDs, complicate pregnancies.

He said part of the response to this is ensuring that expectant mothers have a regime that they follow, leading up to the time of delivery.
