West Indies win 1st Test after Bangladesh batsman forced to retire hurt
The West Indies are now in a celebratory mood having won their first Test at home in two-and-a-half years.
The result was set in stone when they comprehensively beat Bangladesh by 201 runs at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua to take a 1-0 lead in the two Test series.
The visitors’ chase of 334 was brought to a close at 132 for 9 on the fifth morning after they resumed on 109 for 7, just an over after No. 11 Shoriful Islam was struck on the back of his shoulder by Windies quick Alzarri Joseph. Shoriful was not given the green light to continue his innings by the Bangladesh team physio, thus bringing the curtains down on the game as Shoriful retired hurt.
Earlier Hasan Mahmud failed to trouble the scorers when he was removed by Joseph for a duck, as he was caught behind to an away-going delivery, while first innings half centurion Jaker Ali, who started the day on 15, fell lbw for 31 to Joseph who ended with 2 for 32.
With Shoriful retiring hurt, no.10 Taskin Ahmed was left not out on 4 as captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended as the top scorer with 45.
Taking most wickets for West Indies were Kemar Roach 3 for 20 and Jayden Seales 3 for 45.
Final scores: West Indies 450/9 declared & 152, Bangladesh 269/9 declared and 132.
The teams now travel to Jamaica for the second Test at Sabina Park on November 30.
