There was an even split in the preliminary results of yesterday’s four by-elections for the country’s two main political parties.
The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) won the two Parliamentary Constituencies, while the People’s National Party (PNP) won the two Municipal divisions.
The PNP did not contest the Parliamentary seats.
For the South Trelawny Constituency, the JLP’s Marisa Dalrymple Philibert polled 4,146 votes.
She beat independent candidate Lloyd Gillings, who got 1, 434 votes.
In the St. Andrew North West Constituency, the JLP’s Duane Smith polled 1,863 votes.
He beat independent candidate Carl Marshal, who got 111 votes.
The other independent candidate, Rohan Banks had withdrawn from the race prior to election day.
Over in St. Thomas, for the Morant Bay Division, the PNP’s Rosemarie Shaw won with 2, 096 votes.
She defeated the JLP’s Winston Downie, who got 1, 978 votes.
For the Aenon Town division in Clarendon, the PNP’s Delroy Dawson polled 1,646 votes.
He defeated the JLP’s Suzette Barton, who got 1, 592 votes.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica will begin the recount of ballots at 10 o’clock this morning.
