Workers at Iberostar Hotel stage protest this morning over wage related concerns
Workers at the Iberostar Hotel in Montego Bay, St. James, staged a protest this morning over wage-related concerns.
The protest comes amid unrest within the tourism sector in recent weeks.
The placard-bearing workers converged at the entrance of the hotel’s compound as they called for better treatment and higher salaries.
“We want more money” was their mantra.
Earlier this week, staff at the Secrets and Breathless Resorts in Montego Bay, St. James, staged a protest calling for increased wages, among other things.
Following that incident, the management and staff of the resorts agreed to engage in a series of meetings over the next few weeks to determine a new wage package.
Last month, workers at the Royalton Hotel in Negril, Westmoreland, also protested over wage concerns.
The Ministries of Tourism and Labour intervened following that incident, which saw the implementation of measures to address the workers’ concerns.
In the meantime, Opposition Spokesperson on Tourism, Senator Janice Allen, has called for urgent intervention by the government to restore stability to the country’s most vital industry.
Senator Allen expressed her firm support for the workers who are demanding fair treatment and adequate compensation.
She emphasized that their contributions are the backbone of the industry.
At the same time, she acknowledged the challenges faced by investors, who have been grappling with a series of disruptions this year, including travel advisories, severe water shortages, rising inflation, and Hurricane Beryl.
She criticized the government, particularly Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, for failing to act decisively to prevent the escalation of these challenges.
Senator Allen called for calm and constructive dialogue among all stakeholders while urging the government to engage with the opposition to craft effective, long-term solutions.
