Earthquake unit explains that 5.6 magnitude tremor felt yesterday was a foreshock to 6.5 magnitude quake felt an hour later
The Earthquake Unit says the second tremor felt yesterday was the earthquake, and the first, the foreshock.
Residents across several parishes were jolted twice yesterday morning an hour apart.
It was reported that back to back quakes affected the island, one at 10:50 A.M. and the other at 11:50 A.M.
The first had a magnitude of 5.6 while the second was 6.5.
Scientific officer at the Earthquake Unit, Karleen Black says it was determined after the second quake, the stronger of the two, that the first was a foreshock.
International media report that the quake was felt in Cayman, Haiti and Miami in Florida, USA.
According to a CNN report, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Cuba on Sunday, causing material damage in several regions.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said there were landslides, damage to homes and power lines.
Ms. Black says yesterday’s earthquakes which occurred on the northern side of the Cayman Trough or Trench are not connected to the earthquakes in August and last year October.
