Preliminary damage assessments of roads to be conducted following passage of Tropical Storm Rafael

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has instructed that preliminary damage assessments begin across the island.

This follows intense rainfall, flooding and strong winds associated with Tropical Storm Rafael.

Additionally, for several weeks, the island has been experiencing sustained rainfall and saturated conditions resulting in landslides, fallen trees, and road blockages across several regions.

The damage has been compounded by Tropical Storm Rafael’s passage near the island.

Among the most impacted areas are Mount Prospect, Mount Airy and Golden Spring in St. Andrew and the Bog Walk Gorge and Troja Main Road in St. Catherine.

Damage has also been reported in St. Thomas, Manchester, and Kingston.

Minister with responsibility for works, Robert Nesta Morgan, said the National Works Agency is leading the assessment efforts, which should be completed by tomorrow.
