Immigration among key issues that will influence the Jamaican vote in the U.S. presidential election
Caribbean nationals in the United States are closely monitoring several key issues in the 2024 presidential election, particularly the candidates’ stances on immigration.
Donald Trump has pledged that if elected, he will carry out the largest deportation in American history.
According to CBS News, there are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, which accounts for about 3% of the population.
Nearly 80% of these individuals have resided in the country for a decade or more.
Trump’s position has left many undocumented immigrants in the U.S., including Jamaicans, very concerned.
Managing Director of Caribbean Immigrant Services, Irwin Clare, notes that in addition to immigration, there are also worries about Trump’s statements regarding closing the Department of Education.
He believes these issues have led many people to decide to vote.
The economy, housing, healthcare and abortion are other issues being considered by Caribbean immigrants.
American media report that abortion is one of the issues that could influence voters’ decisions in the election.
Community advocate and former mayoral candidate in Florida, Dr. Lavern Deer, highlights the issues on the ballot for Floridians including marijuana.
Dr. Deer is urging Jamaicans at home to encourage their families in the U.S. to vote.
