West Indies beat Sri-Lanka in third ODI to avoid series whitewash

The West Indies, thanks to a whirlwind unbeaten century by Evin Lewis, recorded a morale-boosting eight-wicket victory on Duckworth Lewis in the rain-affected third and final game of the three-match one day international series on Saturday.

This to break a run of 10 straight defeats in Sri Lanka and also avoid a 3-nil whitewash.

Lewis, in his first ODI since 2021, slammed an unbeaten 102 off 61 balls, as the Caribbean side chased down a DLS-adjusted target of 195 in the contest reduced to 23 overs per team, with eight wickets to spare. 

Joining in on the action was Shane Rutherford whose brisk cameo saw him plunder an unbeaten 50 off just 26 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes while sharing in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 88 from 45 deliveries.

Earlier the Sri Lankans after inserted to take first strike had their innings cut in half by rain while on 81 for 1 after 17.2 overs before going on to make 156 for 3 after being given another 5.4 overs to set a competitive total.

Leading the way was Kusal Mendis, who bludgeoned an unbeaten 56 off 22 deliveries after opener Pathum Nissanka was earlier run out while on 56.

Roston chase 1 for 20 and Sherfane Rutherford 1 for 27 were the successful ‘Windies bowlers.

Final scores: Sri Lanka 156 for 3, West Indies 192 for 2.

Sri Lanka despite losing on the day claimed 2-1 series victory.

The ‘Windies will now journey back to the Caribbean for the upcoming white-ball series against England starting October 31.
