Melchie Dumornay & Adalberto Carrasquilla win Concacaf Women’s and Men’s Player of the Year award

Melchie Dumornay (Haiti) and Adalberto Carrasquilla (Panama) have been named 2023/24 Concacaf Women’s and Men’s Players of the Year respectively, after they were selected based on a football-first voting system that included the participation of coaches and players from Concacaf Member Associations, as well as media members from the region and fans.

Olympique Lyonnais Féminin midfielder Dumornay becomes the first Haitian to win Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year award and the second Caribbean player after Jamaica and Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who claimed the accolade last year.

Dumornay has been a rising star in the region due to her stellar performances for club and country. She played in all three of Haiti’s group stage games at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where she competed against England, China, and Denmark.

The 21-year-old also represented her nation in the Road to W Gold Cup tournament later in the year, where she finished as joint top scorer with eight goals – Haiti finished second place in its group and qualified for the 2024 W Gold Cup Prelims.

At the club level with Olympique Lyonnais in the French first division, Dumornay was equally impressive, scoring nine goals in 20 matches across all club competitions, including the first goal in a 2-0 win over PSG to win the 2023 Trophée des Championnes. Her exceptional performance also earned her the 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Champions League Young Player of the Season award.

On the men’s side, Adalberto Carrasquilla, who is the first Panamanian to win Concacaf Men’s Player of the Year honor, helped Panama reach the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup final. The 25-year-old midfielder for his efforts was awarded the Golden Ball and named to the competition’s Best XI.

The Panama City native also enjoyed success at the club level in MLS with Houston Dynamo FC. From June 2023 to July 2024, Carrasquilla scored six goals across all club competitions, helping the Dynamo qualify for the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, claim its second US Open Cup title, and reach the MLS Western Conference Final.

With Carrasquilla on the field, Houston advanced over Saint Louis City SC in Round One of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. The club bowed out against eventual runners-up Columbus Crew.
