St. Ann mother calls for more resources for special needs schools

A St. Ann woman whose daughter is a special needs child, is calling for more resources to be allocated to special needs educational institutions.

Dagrian Barnaby made the call, as she noted that it is challenging for parents and schools to cater to the needs of special children.

Ms. Barnaby’s daughter, 15-year-old Asenath Ashley has cerebral palsy.

Asenath attends the Edgehill School of Special Education in St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann.

Ms. Barnaby said her daughter has outgrown her wheelchair.

This has resulted in the mother having to carry her teen child, on her back to and from school, every day.

Additionally, Ms. Barnaby has to stay at school all day to help her daughter get around, including to the bathroom.

While noting that she would be grateful for an electric wheelchair for her daughter, Ms. Barnaby also called for the school to be given more resources, such as learning charts, and a television set.

Persons wishing to assist Ms. Barnaby with a wheelchair for her daughter may contact 1876-319-9716.
