AgriMin representatives to visit poultry producers today to assess inventories

Representatives from the Agriculture Ministry are to visit the country’s major poultry producers today to conduct assessments of their inventories.

This, as the Government continues its process of support for the rebuilding of the poultry sector.

The sector, which was severely impacted by Hurricane Beryl in July, is now experiencing a downturn of up to 15 per cent with demand increasing by 30 per cent.

The situation has prompted urgent calls for the matter to be addressed.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, portfolio minister, Floyd Green says visiting the country’s major producers is only one critical step in the Ministry’s plan to support the sector.

Mr. Green notes that his Ministry will follow up with producers to ensure they honour assurances made in last Friday’s stakeholders’ meeting to match the growing demand for chicken after the next two weeks.

After the stipulated time frame, another assessment will be done.

Mr. Green says if the challenges in the industry persist, a decision will be made on whether importation is necessary.
