Foreign Affairs Minister says preliminary reports indicate Jamaican community in Florida fared well during passage of Hurricane Milton

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith says so far there has been no report of death or injury among the Jamaican community in Florida, United States following the passage of Hurricane Milton.

Hurricane Milton howled across the Florida peninsula last night, tearing a path of destruction from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic.

It knocked out power, flooded neighbourhoods, destroyed homes, tore the roof off a major sports venue and toppled a massive crane into an office building.

In a post to her social media pages this morning, Mrs. Johnson Smith expressed solidarity with the U.S. – which supported Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Beryl.

She also expressed sympathies and prayers for those affected in Florida – home to one of Jamaica’s largest Diaspora communities.

Mrs. Johnson Smith noted that though the reports so far are positive, she remains cautious, as the situation in Florida was devastating.

She urged Jamaicans in the State to contact the Consulate for coordination of needs and referrals to State or Federal authorities, and nearby community members who may be offering assistance.
