Polls set to open for St. Ann NE by-election in few minutes; Electoral Office says all in place

The Electoral Office of Jamaica says all is in place for today’s by-election in North Eastern St. Ann.

Three candidates are vying for the post of Member of Parliament.

They are Jamaica Labour Party candidate, Matthew Samuda, independent candidate David Anderson and Chase Neil of the United Independents’ Congress (UIC).

The People’s National Party (PNP) is not contesting the by-election.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, Director of Elections, Glaspole Brown said electoral workers will be ready to accommodate the 43,827 registered voters in the Constituency.

Polls will open at 7 A.M. and close at 5 P.M.

Voters are entitled to three hours’ time-off from work to vote.

This is in addition to the usual lunch hour.

The law, however, does not apply to persons who commence work at 10 A.M. or later, or end work at, or before 2 P.M.

Mr. Brown reminded voters to take their voter ID cards to the polling station, and that the use or display of cell phones, cameras or other recording devices is not allowed inside.

The St. Ann North Eastern Constituency became vacant following the resignation of Marsha Smith, earlier this month.
