Reports so far indicate that Jamaicans living in Florida, USA safe following passage of Hurricane Helene

Jamaicans living in Florida in the United States are reporting that they are safe following the passage of Hurricane Helene which left a trail of destruction across the state and the entire Southeastern U.S.

The death toll linked to the Category 4 hurricane has climbed to 42.

The hurricane has also left approximately 4 million people without power in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Speaking with IRIE FM News this afternoon, Consul General of Jamaica in Miami, Oliver Mair said there has been no report of Jamaicans being killed or harmed in the hurricane.

While Helene has weakened to a tropical depression as it moves north across the United States’ Southeast, it is still packing strong winds and heavy rains in what the National Hurricane Centre called “life-threatening” conditions.

As a result, Mr. Mair is urging Jamaicans to obey the advisories to ensure they and their families remain safe.
