West Indies complete 3-nil whitewash against South Africa

The West Indies are in a celebratory mood having maintained their recent dominance of South Africa to complete a whitewash of the three-match T20 International series in Trinidad.

The result was set in stone after the Windies eased to an eight-wicket triumph with 22 balls to spare on Duckworth/Lewis in the rain-affected third and final game at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.

Set a target of 109 the Windies made 116 for 2 in 9.2 overs, led by Shai Hope who slammed an unbeaten 42 off 24 balls that included 4 sixes while sharing in an unbroken third wicket partnership of 56 with Shimron Hetmyer who made 31 not out having faced 17 deliveries.

Nicholas Pooran was also among the runs with 35 from 13 while there was a wicket each for Bjorn Fortuin and Ottneil Baartman.

Earlier the visitors inserted to bat made 108 for 4 in the contest that was reduced to a 13-over affair after the start of play was delayed by an hour before another 70 minutes was lost after another weather interruption midway through the fifth over of South Africa’s innings

Tristan Stubbs played a pivotal role hitting 5 fours and 3 sixes on his way to 40 off just 15 balls against Romario Shepherd who took 2 for 14.

Shepherd was later named Player of The Match for his efforts while Shai Hope won the Player of The Series award having 134 runs across the three games.

Victory for West Indies was their eight in 10 matches against South Africa since March 2023.
