Jamaicans for Justice demands that trial for persons implicated in death of Mario Deane starts November 18
Human rights lobby group, Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is demanding that the trial for the persons implicated in the death of Mario Deane starts on November 18.
JFJ is also demanding that the matter be transferred from the St. James Parish Court to the Home Circuit Court in Kingston.
The call was made by JFJ Executive Director Mickel Jackson at a protest in Montego Bay today to support Deane’s mother, Mercia Frazer in her unending quest to get justice for her son.
Frazer lamented that its been 10 years since her son’s death, yet the court case has dragged on, always being put off due to issues with jurors.
Citing the case delays, due to jury issues, Ms Jackson noted that justice delayed is justice denied.
She called on citizens selected for jury duty to do their part in getting justice for Deane.
Ms Jackson explained that the request to have the matter sent to the Home Circuit Court in Kingston is in the interest of justice.
Three police officers are facing multiple charges in relation to the death of Deane.
Reports are that in August 2014, Deane was arrested for possession of a ganja spliff.
He was allegedly beaten while in police custody at lock up. He fell into a coma, and later died at hospital.
Police Corporal Elaine Stewart, Constable Juliana Clevon and Constable Marlon Grant were on duty at the time of the incident.
They were arrested and charged with manslaughter, misconduct in a public office, and perverting the course of justice.
