Transport Minister wants review of security at Jamaica’s airports, following breach at Sangster International

Following yesterday’s security breach at the Sangster International Airport, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says a review of the security arrangements at the airport may need to be undertaken.

Four flights were cancelled and several others delayed at the Montego Bay based airport.

Reports are that some time after midday, what was initially thought to be a firearm passed through the pre-boarding passenger screening machine.

The item was reportedly spotted in a bag on screening images after the passenger had passed through and entered the departures lounge.

This triggered emergency protocols which included the cessation of boarding until the passenger and the bag were identified.

It was subsequently discovered that the item in question was a lighter in the shape of a gun.

Reacting to the incident, Minister Vaz noted that it caused a lot of disruption and pointed to the need for a review of security protocols at both airports.
