Former Vere Technical star Nickeisha Pryce is the new women’s national 400 metres record holder.

This after she turned in a sensational performance to strike gold in the women’s 400 meters final at Hayward field in Eugene, Oregon clocking a massive 48.89 seconds, on the 4th and final day of action in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championship. 

It was also a new collegiate record, a massive personal and season best as Pryce in her senior year, and led home a clean sweep for the University of Arkansas. 

The winning time by Pryce was also a meet  and championship record and broke the previous Jamaican best of 49.30 set by Loraine Fenton back in 2002, and ranks her 13th all time with Mexico’s Ana Guevara.

Meanwhile Brianna Lyston of Louisiana State University was a second place finisher in the women’s 100m clocking 10.89 seconds, behind the favourite Mackenzie Long of University of Mississippi who won in 10.82 seconds. 

Akelia Smith of the University of Texas who earlier won the women’s long jump , successfully secured a second title at the Championship, after winning the women’s Triple Jump with an effort measuring 14.13 meters.  

National champion Lamar Distin of Texas A&M finished third in the women;s high jump final with an effort of 1.91 metres. 

Still in the field former St. Jago standout Abigail Martin, also of Texas A&M finished 8th with a throw registering 57.81 metres. 

Gabrielle Mattews formerly of the Queens School now attending University of Mississippi, was a 7th place finisher in the women’s 400 metres hurdles clocking 55.33 seconds,  

Action on Friday saw Romaine Beckford of Arkansas winning gold in the men’s high jump with an effort of 2.26 metres.

Two other Jamaicans Racquil Broderick and Jevaughn Powell were also among the podium finishers. 

Brodrick of the University of South Carolina was second in the men’s discus final with a throw measuring 61.77 metres while Powell representing the university of Florida was third in the men’s 400 meters final  in a personal best 44.54 seconds.
