Public transport operators are anxiously awaiting the governments’ response to concerns submitted their representative groups regarding the suspension of drivers license for motorists with 10 or more demerit points.

Several operators had indicated that they would withdraw service or protest otherwise to push government to put the automatic suspension on hold.

That decision was however rescinded after at least two public transport operator groups said they would not support or participate in the protest action.

In a release, the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) noted that after a stakeholder meeting on Thursday, the government requested a submission of concerns from the public transport sector. 

The release said the submission was made on Friday, May 31.

According to TODSS, it believes the right thing to do is to await a response from the government. 

It said striking at this time, would not be the right course of action. 

It said it expects that the government will move with a high level of urgency in responding to the submission, taking into consideration the hundreds of drivers in the sector who will lose their licences in the next few days, if the Island Traffic Authority resumes the suspension. 

TODSS was supported by the All Voice Taxi Association which said that it too was awaiting a response from the government. 

However, President of the All Voice Taxi Association Oscar Finnikin said he could not say how long they are prepared to wait and how they will respond if the government’s response is not favorable.
