As Jamaica observes National Children’s Day today, the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is urging adults not to expose children to various acts of violence.

The appeal follows a number of violent incidents being committed in spaces occupied by children.

In one of the latest incidents, students of the Pembroke Hall Primary School in St. Andrew, reportedly discovered the body of the school’s night watchman on Wednesday morning.

The discovery prompted the dismissal of classes and subsequent counselling sessions.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, JTA President Leighton Johnson said violence is no longer abstract to children. 

He said if the nation is to protect the mental state of youngsters, focus must be placed on shielding them from violent acts.
