The National Workers Union (NWU) is claiming that the management of the Jamaica Public Service repeatedly implements policy changes, without discussions with union representatives.

The union and the utility company are at odds over claims, that despite assurances management failed to honour written agreements to convert 30 contract workers to permanent positions.

The company maintained that the conversions under this agreement are being done over three years, starting in 2023, and are on track for completion by 2025, as agreed.

Speaking with Irie Fm News, NWU’s General Secretary, Granville Valentine explained that the management agreed to the conversions but at the scheduled date on March 1, a new clause was introduced.

This clause, he said was being used against one of the 30 employees whose contract is to be converted to a permanent position.

He said efforts to resolve the matter proved futile and this led to Friday’s strike notice on the company.

The Labour Ministry has called a meeting at its offices on Monday to address the matter.
