Classes have shifted to the online modality at the Grange Hill High School in Westmoreland, following the shooting death of a student and the wounding of another on Thursday.

Dead is 16 year old Carson Barrett of Top Lincoln in Grange Hill.

A 15 year old female student has been admitted to hospital.

The boy and girl had just left the school’s sports day event when they were attacked by gunmen on a motorcycle. 

Both students sustained wounds and were taken to hospital, where Barrett was pronounced dead.

Principal of the Grange Hill High School, Trevine Donaldson-Lawrence told IRIE FM News that as a result of the incident, classes are being held virtually today.

She added that grief counseling is also being done.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Lawrence said the school has seen a reduction in violent incidents in recent times.

She credited the police for this.

She said the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime investigations branch (CTOC), conducted anti-gang sessions at the institution.

Meanwhile, the Westmoreland Police say the gun attack which left 16-year-old Carson Barrett dead and another student wounded yesterday, was gang-related.

Police have theorized that Barrett was the target of the attack.

Commanding Officer for Westmoreland, Superintendent Othneil Dobson, says lawmen are following strong investigative leads into the incident.
