Some schools still unable to fill critical vacancies

As the issue of teacher migration continues to plague the education sector, some schools are still unable to fill vacancies in critical subject areas.

That’s according to president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), Leighton Johnson.

Noting that several teachers migrated last year, Mr. Johnson said some of these posts have not yet been filled, even though the new school term is set to begin soon.

In the meantime, he said efforts continue to ensure the overall welfare of teachers, so they may remain in the local education system.

Meantime, Mr. Johnson noted that the issue of safety and security in schools were sore points in 2023, which ought to be addressed.

He reiterated the need for more security in schools, especially in violence-prone areas.

Mr. Johnson suggested that both the Ministries of Education and National Security move urgently to increase the number of resource officers in schools to better reduce the display of violent behaviour.
